Caring for your AIRE

AIRE, the digestive tracker, in its packaging
AIRE's pouch is made of special material that protects it from the environment
  1. Keep AIRE in its protective pouch when you're not using it.
  2. Keep AIRE away from smoke, for example, from cigarettes and cooking. Don't smoke cigarettes or e-cigarettes shortly before using the device.
  3. Keep the device away from products that contain silicone, such as hair, beauty and sun-care products, as well as lubricants. Silicone will often appear on ingredients lists as "dimethicone", or other ingredients ending in 'cone'.
  4. Keep AIRE dry. The mouthpiece is detachable and can be washed with soap and water. Try to keep the body of the device dry.
  5. Use the USB cable included with your AIRE to charge the battery.

Getting started

  1. Once you have logged in, the app will highlight the "Main Menu" and "Thumb Menu" to help you find your way around.
  2. An image of AIRE, the personal digestion tracker
Press the power button to activate AIRE
When the central canal lights up, AIRE is ready to use
  3. After the intro, we recommend that you start with a breath test. Start by turning on your AIRE using the silver power button on the side.
  4. Lights on the mouthpiece will begin to illuminate as AIRE warms up. This process can take up to 120 seconds. AIRE is ready when the central canal lights up.
  5. While AIRE is warming up, tap the + menu in the bottom right corner of your screen and select "Take Breath".
  6. Once your AIRE is warmed up, the app will ask you to select your device from a list. If you don't see your device, select the three-dot menu in the top right and tap "Scan".
  7. A fermentation score from AIRE, which measure fermentation in the gut
A high score means there is high fermentation occuring that may lead to uncomfortable digestive symptoms.
  8. Once your device is paired, you will be prompted to take a deep breath and hold it for three seconds. (Keep the AIRE away from your face as you inhale)
  9. Hold the device with the logo facing up and create a seal with your lips on the mouthpiece. You should hold the device straight so your breath flows through the device, rather than hitting the inner roof. Slowly and steadily exhale into the mouthpiece (where the central canal is lit up) for five seconds. A cool, medium-intensity exhalation is all you need.
  10. After you're done, the app will provide you with a "Fermentation Score", which will be added to your timeline on the main page of the app.
  11. A high score means there is high fermentation occuring that may lead to uncomfortable digestive symptoms. For more information on interpreting your breath scores, visit

Doing a Food Challenge

AIRE comes with several sachets of FODMAPs — specific food ingredients that are commonly hard to digest. These are certain types of carbohydrates that can pass through the stomach and small intestine without being fully digested. Once they reach the large intestine, bacteria feed on them, causing the release of certain gases. This process is called fermentation, and can cause serious digestive disruption. Testing your fermentation levels with a FODMAP can help you figure out if that specific food component is potentially contributing to your digestive discomfort, but it isn't required to start using AIRE. You can test after regular meals as soon as you receive AIRE, and do your Food Challenges at a time that's convenient for you, or skip them!

If you do have difficulty digesting a particular FODMAP, the test could cause you temporary discomfort. If you'd prefer to avoid that, then you can choose not to do these structured tests and instead just do breath tests after regular meals to assess how well you are digesting what you normally eat.

Doing a FODMAP test requires some preparation. The app will guide you through the process as you do it. Please select the upper left menu and tap the "Pre-FODMAP Test Info" to review the necessary information before beginning.
